The success of our summer associate program has helped fuel our growth. Each year, the program attracts some of the brightest law students in the nation, all of whom bring advanced technical training and/or academic degrees along with their legal credentials. More than 75 percent of our current partners began their careers with us as summer associates.
As a part of its summer associate program, each year the firm offers the McAndrews Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship. A $5,000 fellowship and a paid summer clerkship position are awarded to a qualified first-year law student of a diverse background who is committed to pursuing a career in patent law. Continually developing our summer associates to
be the best in the field, McAndrews, Held & Malloy summer associates are each partnered with
two attorneys—an associate and a Board Member—who
serve as resources on all aspects of the firm
and its practice. Our summer associates work on
assignments of importance to our clients and our
firm, including researching a variety of legal
topics, drafting briefs and legal memoranda, as
well as preparing for and attending depositions,
trials, hearings and appellate arguments. In addition,
due to our firm's partnership with the Legal Aid
Foundation, our summer associates also assist
with SSI appeals for disabled children, as well
as cases involving the Violence Against Women
Act.
Due to our firm's active role among legal and other professional and industry trade associations, our summer associates are kept aware of the latest developments that might impact our clients.
Our firm provides summaries of Federal Circuit
decisions as they are issued, as well as advance
sheets for all published patent, trademark, copyright
and antitrust decisions. We also encourage our
staff to take an active role in Continuing Legal
Education programs to ensure that we remain a
constant source of superior counsel to our clients.
Golf outings, major league baseball games, picnics
and scavenger hunts throughout Chicago are just
some of the activities that McAndrews, Held &
Malloy summer associates enjoy. At these functions
and at other informal gatherings, our summer associates
learn more about the firm in a relaxed environment
and get better acquainted with senior attorneys
on a more personal level.
