Professional Experience
Ed Mas' trial and appellate litigation practice focuses on intellectual property and technology related disputes.  His practice also includes reexaminations and other proceedings in the United States Patent and Trademark Office, client counseling, licensing, clearance opinions, and patent and trademark prosecution and portfolio management.  In litigation, Mr. Mas has served as lead or co-counsel and has handled all aspects of discovery, written and argued dispositive motions, conducted Markman hearings, and participated in multi-week trials and arbitrations.  A list of representative cases is provided below.  Mr. Mas also has briefed and argued appeals successfully before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. See, e.g., Advanced Cardiovascular Systems, Inc. (“ACS”) v. Medtronic, Inc., 265 F.3d 1294 (Fed. Cir. 2001); SciMed Life Systems, Inc. v. ACS, 242 F.3d 1337 (Fed. Cir. 2001) (affirming non-infringement finding where accused products had sales exceeding $1 billion).  Mr. Mas has been selected by his peers in Illinois as a "Leading Lawyer" in Intellectual Property Law.  Most recently, Mr. Mas was named one of "The World's Leading Patent Practitioners" for 2012 by Intellectual Asset Management.  The publication called him "a terrifically savvy litigator" and said that he "routinely secures the best position for his clients."

Mas has worked with clients in a wide range of technologies, with a special emphasis on medical devices.  For example, he has represented Abbott, Guidant Corporation, and ACS in several U.S. and related foreign disputes involving angioplasty catheters and stent systems. See, e.g., ACS v. Medtronic, Inc., 81 F. Supp. 2d 978 (N.D. Cal. 1999); ACS v. SciMed Life Systems, Inc., 63 F. Supp. 2d 1064 (N.D. Cal. 1999).  His practice focuses on patent litigation and other complex technology-related litigation.  One of his professional highlights includes securing a $166 million dollar victory for ACS which rates among the top patent damages awards of all time.  In addition to medical devices, Mas’s litigation practice has involved such diverse technologies as antibody expression systems, barcode scanners and printers, bicycle equipment, large industrial machinery, and automotive sensors.

Mr. Mas received his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of Penn’s national moot court team, earning an award for outstanding trial advocacy.

Mr. Mas received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Northwestern University, where he attended on a Chick Evans Scholarship.  While attending Northwestern, Ed worked as a co-op engineer at the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors Corporation. He later held the position of design engineer at General Motors.

Mr. Mas is a member of several bar associations including the American Bar Association, Illinois Bar Association and American Intellectual Property Law Association.
